President, University of North Dakota (2016-2019)

As President of the University of North Dakota (2016–2019), Mark Kennedy led the state’s flagship university through a period of significant transformation. Despite a 20% cut in state funding, he launched an ambitious strategic plan, improved student outcomes, raised UND’s research profile, and revitalized campus facilities. His leadership was recognized with the American Council on Education’s Award for Institutional Transformation.

Strategic Renewal in Adversity

Kennedy’s strategic plan galvanized the campus around a shared mission and measurable objectives. It shaped every facet of the university’s operations and gained broad support from faculty, staff, and community leaders.

Student Success and Retention Gains

Graduation rates improved by 10 percentage points during Kennedy’s tenure. UND launched the Finish in 4 campaign, invested in support services, and improved student outcomes across demographics. Rural and first-generation students were prioritized in new pipeline efforts.

Research and Economic Development

UND expanded research funding and activities, setting the stage for its eventual elevation to R1 status. Kennedy advocated for state-wide investment in university research and aligned UND’s strengths with workforce development priorities.

Campus Revitalization

With over $500 million in planned capital projects, Kennedy began the largest physical transformation of UND in decades. Obsolete structures were removed, and P3 partnerships funded major renovations, positioning the campus for long-term growth.

Respectful Leadership on Cultural Transition

Kennedy oversaw UND’s NCAA-mandated transition from the Fighting Sioux to the Fighting Hawks with inclusivity, transparency, and respect. His leadership helped navigate a divisive issue in a way that earned support across constituencies.

Inclusive Excellence

Leadership appointments during Kennedy’s presidency reflected diverse backgrounds, and DEI priorities were embedded in the strategic plan. Programs and scholarships for underserved students expanded opportunity and supported campus belonging.

Partnerships & Community Engagement

Kennedy fostered strong ties with the city, state leaders, and industry partners. His administration created new models for community-engaged research, K-12 pipeline development, and public-private collaboration.
